From Martha Graham to Bintou Dembélé, via Isadora Duncan and Carolyn Carlson, many female choreographers have marked their era and the history of dance. Laura Cappelle, sociologist and critic for the New York Times and the Financial Times, who edited the book Nouvelle Histoire de la danse en Occident (Seuil), will explain the links between the history of dance and the choreographic artists presented at Cannes.

Gilbert MAYER Conference « Le Marquis de Cuevas, aristocrat and dance sponsor »

Founder of the first dance company in New York, the Marquis de Cuevas became a key figure in European dance as he settled in Monte Carlo in 1947. He worked with Rosella Hightower and presented her to the European public during the various performances of the Grand Ballet of the Marquis de Cuevas.

Representing the French school across the world, Gilbert Mayer is the teacher par excellence of French style. From Baryshnikov to Nureyev, Gilbert Mayer has rubbed shoulders with some of the biggest stars. He has devoted his life to the service of dance and taught at the Opéra National de Paris since 1951.

*Initiated in 2017 by the Direction de la Culture de la Mairie de Cannes, this residence allows
each year 200 young people benefit from a journey of discovery around art
choreographic. After Abdoulaye Konate, Julien Ficely, Christophe Garcia and Balkis Moutashar,
Michel Béjar will begin his immersion in September 2021.

At the end of the performances, we organise a meeting with the artistic team, allowing you to talk with the choreographers about their journey and the creative process.
